Hi, I’m Kelly Rebecca and I joined HWG at the beginning of 2017 after moving back to Hastings from Canterbury. Although I have only been a member for a short while, I have already found the group immensely encouraging. I had never realised how enjoyable it would be to spend time with people who love to write as much as I do.
My journey as a writer has definitely been a rocky one. As a child I was obsessed with reading. I gorged on books, emptied every library and copied sentences which I loved in little diaries. When we got a computer the first thing I did was type out the whole of ‘Three Little Bears’. It took me three weeks. At school I would waffle on and on in every written assignment. I would cheerfully turn every newspaper article, fact file, recipe and history project into a story, but no-one could ever understand them. I couldn’t spell a single word and my sentences didn’t make sense to anyone but me. It wasn’t until I was 16 that they realised I was dyslexic. This shook my dream of being a writer- you can’t be a writer if you’re dyslexic can you?
I believed that firmly for the next three years. I limited my writing to my diaries and shouted at anyone who tried to read them. It was only when I broke my pelvis at 19, and was confined to my bed for three months, that I started experimenting with story writing again. Slowly but surely my confidence grew and I feel back in love with writing. Now, five years later, I write as much as I can. I currently have a couple of novels in their infancy which I hope to grow in this coming year.<< Marcus Towner Marcia Woolf >>
